LiftLab’s name comes from what it does: lift is performance above baseline, lab is the willingness to take a plan apart. This matters because finding real lift requires a precise instrument for reading data, not a casual glance. Without knowing what each channel and the next dollar produce, a brand can only guess at growth versus profitability. This video explains why LiftLab treats its name as a philosophy, not branding.
What Is LiftLab? Why “Lift” and “Lab” Are an Operating Philosophy, Not Just a Name
LiftLab’s name is an operating philosophy, not just a name, because the amounts of lift worth finding are often small, and small is exactly what a casual glance at a dashboard misses. In this video, John Wallace, CEO of LiftLab, explains where the company’s name actually comes from: lift is the thing marketers are perpetually chasing, performance above a baseline, whether from better targeting, better creative, or any other lever, and lab is the tinkerer’s mindset required to find it, the willingness to crack a media plan open and accept some short-term pain for long-term gain.
Wallace frames choosing a marketing measurement partner the way a student picks a lab partner: do you want someone working from the data equivalent of a naked eye, or someone with a genuinely high-precision instrument? LiftLab is built to be the latter, scrutinizing data closely enough to catch even small pockets of lift, because once a brand knows the lift each channel produces and what the next dollar specifically would return, it’s actually in a position to make an informed trade-off between spending more efficiently and spending more to hit a growth target, rather than guessing at the compromise. Wallace closes by noting this isn’t just branding, in nearly every customer meeting, the team is still cracking open the media plan and asking where the lift is and where to place the next bet.

In this video, LiftLab CEO John Wallace explains what marketing lift actually means, and why the company’s name is a philosophy, not just a brand.
[0:00 – 0:23] Defining Lift
We get asked sometimes, mostly by prospects, where did you come up with the name LiftLab? Lift is something that marketers are continuously looking for. In this case, what we mean by lift is an increase in performance, right? Something over a baseline. Everything we do, we’re trying to find lift, better targeting, better creative. We’re always looking for lift.
[0:23 – 0:40] The Tinkerer Mindset
Lab, that’s kind of easier, right? Lab is that kind of tinkerer mindset. It’s the people that are willing to crack something open, take it apart, and quite frankly, they have an appetite to sacrifice some short-term gains in order to benefit in the long term.
[0:40 – 0:56] The Choice of Partner
So in your quest for lift, and if you have kind of a lab assignment, you always have a choice in science labs to choose your lab partner. You have to kind of ask yourself, do I want a partner who’s going to look at the data with their naked eye, or would I choose a partner that has a high-precision instrument?
[0:56 – 1:25] Precision and Strategy
Clearly, LiftLab falls in the latter. We’ve worked hard on an instrument to look at data, scrutinize data, and go find lift, even small amounts of lift. We’re constantly looking at data with the brand to find opportunities to exploit the trade-offs of growth and profitability. We can always make things more efficient by spending less, but that might not meet our growth goals. Once we’ve found lift, and we know the lift for different channels, and we know the lift of the next dollar, we’re in a position to go make the smartest compromises between growth and profitability.
[1:25 – 1:41] A Philosophy in Practice
This approach has really served us well. Really glad that we chose the name, and in nearly every customer meeting, we’re cracking open the media plan over and over again, asking the question, “where’s the lift?” and “where do I want to place the next bet?” LiftLab isn’t just our name; it’s a philosophy that we live by.
Key Lessons: What Marketing Lift Actually Requires to Find
Performance optimization: Marketers must continuously strive for performance gains that exceed established baselines to ensure success.
Strategic tinkering: Adopting a lab-based mindset requires the courage to dismantle existing plans and sacrifice short-term wins for sustained future benefits.
Precision tools: Utilizing high-precision instruments to analyze data is superior to relying on raw observation when measuring marketing effectiveness.
Strategic compromise: Successful media planning involves identifying the value of the next dollar to make calculated trade-offs between aggressive growth and overall profitability.
