Marketing ROI has to answer one question in an investment review: if finance hands over an extra $50,000, how much revenue comes back? This matters because marketing teams that can’t quantify that return lose the budget by default. Without channel-level data, marketers can’t point to which under-saturated channel would generate the highest return. This video explains how to identify that channel and prove its return before asking for more budget.
Why Marketing ROI Determines Whether Finance Approves Your Next Budget Request
Marketing ROI determines whether finance approves your next budget request, because the investment review conversation always comes down to one question: if you had an extra dollar, how much more revenue would it generate? In this video, John Wallace, CEO of LiftLab, describes a version of this conversation nearly every marketing team recognizes: finance offers an incremental $50,000 and asks where it would go and how much it would return. If the team can’t credibly commit to returning more than that $50,000, the funding doesn’t happen. Wallace notes that when he asks teams talking to LiftLab whether they get this question, the answer is usually that they heard it in the meeting right before the call, or that it comes up every week.
The fix is channel-level evidence. Rather than a vague commitment, LiftLab helps teams point to specific channels that can return more than the amount requested, then rank them, so the budget goes to the strongest candidate, sometimes one capable of returning double the ask. That channel’s defining trait is usually that it isn’t fully saturated yet, meaning there’s real money being left on the table. Once the budget is deployed, the same system tracks whether it actually delivered.

[0:00 – 0:31] The Finance and Marketing Challenge
There’s a common dialogue between the finance team and the marketing team, and it kind of goes like this: Finance says, “Hey, I’ve got an extra $50,000. A: where would you spend it, and B: how much revenue would it generate, or how much more forecast would you agree to or sign up for?” And if you can’t say that you’ll agree to more than $50,000, then you’re not going to get the money, right? That’s kind of a foregone conclusion. I ask teams that are talking to LiftLab, “Do you get this question?” And my favorite answer is, “I got it in the meeting before this call,” or “I hear that every week.”
[0:31 – 0:42] Understanding the Investment Review
It’s actually formally called, in some organizations, “investment review,” and it is a meeting that happens either weekly or monthly between finance and marketing.
[0:42 – 1:16] How LiftLab Solves the ROI Problem
That’s the opportunity for LiftLab to shine. We really are a system to help answer the “how much.” As long as you can answer that you can return more than $50,000 in benefit, you’ll probably get that increased budget. The evidence that we would share with the finance team would be, “Look, there’s multiple channels where we can return more than $50,000 in benefit, but the highest of them is this channel over here.” So we’re going to place the bet on the front runner, and maybe that particular channel can return over $100,000. Set another way, it’s a channel that is not yet fully saturated, and we are leaving money on the table.
[1:16 – 1:26] Deployment and Monitoring
And so when the extra budget is brought forward and deployed, then we get to sit and watch on the back end and make sure it delivered.
Key Lessons: Proving Marketing ROI to Win Budget Increases
Investment reviews: These recurring meetings require clear evidence of how additional capital will generate revenue to justify funding.
Data-driven confidence: Having accurate insights into channel performance allows marketers to answer the critical “how much” question effectively.
Optimizing spend: Focusing on channels that are not fully saturated ensures that budget is deployed where it delivers the highest return.
Proving value: Demonstrating potential returns beyond the initial investment amount is essential for maintaining and growing marketing budgets.
