Marketing measurement evolution has moved the industry from multi-touch attribution toward incrementality testing and marketing mix modeling. This shift is happening because AI now handles most media buying, so measurement complexity has grown as buying complexity has shrunk. Without a clear strategy, marketers navigate a crowded field of tools with no single fit-all solution. This video breaks down how creative, media buying, and measurement roles are being redefined.
Why Marketing Measurement Evolution Is Outpacing Media Buying Complexity
Marketing measurement evolution is outpacing media buying complexity because AI and automation have taken over most day-to-day execution, while measurement has splintered into a growing field of incrementality and marketing mix modeling tools with no single winner. In this conversation, LiftLab’s Jon Lorenzini and John Wallace talk with growth marketing entrepreneur Adam Lovallo about how the measurement landscape has changed, from a handful of multi-touch attribution vendors that have largely disappeared to today’s much broader ecosystem of incrementality and MMM tools. Lovallo notes that even agencies now run a constellation of different solutions across clients, since no universal, one-size-fits-all option has taken over the market.
Wallace reframes the shift in simple terms: creative is the what, media buying was the how, and measurement is the how much. As algorithms and automation take over the how, human attention has shifted more toward the what and the how much, which also has the side benefit of making traditional and digital channels easier to compare on a like-for-like basis. Lovallo, for his part, is candid that the hands-on skill of manipulating media buying platforms directly is a discipline that isn’t coming back.
In this video, you’ll learn:
The significant transition in the marketing industry from manual media buying execution to algorithmic, AI-driven automation
How modern tools are helping businesses navigate increasing measurement complexity in a privacy-centric environment
The importance of balancing creative strategy with precise financial measurement to determine marketing effectiveness
Why a single, universal measurement solution remains elusive, leading agencies to adopt a diverse, multi-tool ecosystem

In this video, LiftLab’s Jon Lorenzini and John Wallace talk with growth marketing entrepreneur Adam Lovallo about how marketing measurement has evolved as AI takes over media buying execution.
[0:00 – 0:12] Navigating Marketing Complexity
[Jon Lorenzini]: I mean it sounds like there is a lot of solutions popping up every day both on the measurement side and on the creative side. How do you make sense of all of the complexity now, because the execution complexity is going away but now measurement complexity is going up.
[0:12 – 0:50] The Evolution of Measurement Tools
[Adam Lovallo]: You mentioned a couple tools there. How do you evaluate and how do you decide on which tools? You guys know the measurement side even better than I do. It went from a handful of multi-touch attribution companies, which kind of do not really exist anymore, to now a whole new ecosystem of incrementality and other MMM tools. It is very challenging to navigate and understand the differences between these things, and even as an agency we have a constellation of solutions that our clients use, including you guys, but I do not think there is any one-size-fits-all or universal solution that has gained share.
[0:50 – 1:30] Reframing Performance Marketing
[John Wallace]: I am going to summarize what you said for the industry. It is kind of like the creative is the what, the media buying was the how, and the measurement is the how much. It kind of feels like if the how is going into algorithms and AI and black boxes, we focused more, by human nature, more on the what, the creative and the how much. I think the rise of all this stuff, like your tools and others, is awesome, and it also levels the playing field for traditional channels and digital channels, because you can kind of measure them more so on an apples to apples basis, which is cool.
[1:30 – 1:48] The Changing Role of Media Buyers
[Adam Lovallo]: I think it is a cool time to be in this field generally, but it is a bit of a drag to me that knowing how to manipulate these systems to get good results, like the actual day-to-day media buying, is gone. That is kind of sad. I enjoyed doing that. I think a lot of people did, but that is gone forever, that is not coming back.
Key Lessons: Navigating Marketing Measurement Evolution
The evolution of measurement: The industry has moved beyond outdated attribution models toward advanced incrementality testing and MMM tools that measure marketing performance more accurately and completely.
The changing role of media buyers: With algorithms increasingly handling day-to-day execution, the human element in media buying is shifting toward strategy, creative oversight, and interpreting complex measurement data.
Leveling the playing field: Advanced measurement technology now enables brands to compare traditional and digital media channels on an apples-to-apples basis, significantly improving budget allocation decisions.
Complexity management: Rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all solution, successful marketers are building a constellation of specialized tools to solve specific business problems.
