Agency-Client Collaboration in Marketing: Why Agencies Should Want Better Measurement
Watch the Video

Agency-client collaboration in marketing improves once both sides stop chasing last-click and start proving incremental revenue. This matters because defending last-click means defending a metric that overstates bottom-funnel performance, against the client’s own interests. Without that shift, weekly meetings stay limited to pacing and CPMs, and clients stay too nervous to fund upper-funnel spend. This video explains how aligning agency and client incentives turns performance reviews into real strategic dialogue.

Why Agency-Client Collaboration in Marketing Depends on Aligned Incentives

Agency-client collaboration in marketing depends on aligned incentives, because an agency clinging to last-click optimization is protecting a metric that isn’t actually in its shared client’s best interest. In this video, John Wallace, CEO of LiftLab, describes how large brands have introduced LiftLab directly to their agencies of record, and how agencies that lean into that collaboration end up seeing the impact of better measurement on their own operations, not just their client’s.

For that to work, the agency has to actually participate: contributing to weekly optimizations, joining the quarter’s test-and-learn agenda, and letting go of the simpler, last-click-only world some agencies are tempted to retreat to. Wallace argues that once an agency recognizes last-click isn’t serving the advertiser well, incentives align naturally, and one of the clearest signs of that alignment is agencies reporting that their shared clients now spend more confidently on upper-funnel media. The bigger shift is in the weekly conversation itself: pacing, trafficking, and CPMs don’t go away, but they get supplemented with a harder question, how much incremental revenue did we actually drive, and how much more could flexing spend produce. Wallace considers an agency referring a new client to LiftLab the clearest proof that the incentives are genuinely aligned.

In this video, you’ll learn:

  • How marketing effectiveness platforms impact agency operations

  • Why agency participation is essential for successful change management

  • The importance of moving beyond last-click attribution models

  • How data transparency increases overall client confidence in media spend

  • The value of augmenting strategy meetings with incremental revenue insights

John Wallace explains how marketing effectiveness platforms turn agencies into collaborators, not resistors, and why that shift benefits everyone.

[0:00 – 0:21] The Benefits of Marketing Effectiveness Platforms

Sometimes our customers ask us, how can our agency benefit from a marketing effectiveness platform and the insights that we’re going to get out of it? We’ve had the good fortune of working with some large brands that made those introductions to their agency of record, ones such as iProspect, which rolls up into Dentsu, PMG, VaynerMedia, and Camelot, just to name a few.

[0:22 – 0:58] Collaborative Agency Engagement

What we’re impressed by is the collaboration with these types of agencies. We’ve been selling brand direct, but during these interactions with the agencies, they get to see firsthand the impact of better measurement, not only on the shared customer but on their own operation. Ultimately, we’ve recognized that the agency has to be on board for a platform; the amount of transition and change management that’s necessary to change the marketing P&L means they’re going to participate, looking for weekly optimizations using these new numbers. They’re going to participate in contributing to the test-and-learn agenda that we’re going to follow for the quarter.

[0:59 – 1:39] Aligning Incentives for Success

We love having their participation, not their resistance. The opposite would be a kind of “head-in-the-sand” mentality, where they harken back to the days where it was much simpler and they just optimized the last click. That’s just not in the advertiser’s best interest. So as soon as an agency recognizes that, all of the incentives start to be aligned, and I love aligning incentives, it’s the best way to get progress. We’re seeing that the agencies are noticing an increase in client confidence, and one of the best compliments that we’ve received from an agency is, “We like LiftLab because our shared customers are willing to spend more confidently on upper-funnel media.” That just makes me feel like we’ve done our jobs correctly, and everyone’s going to benefit from that.

[1:40 – 2:30] Augmenting Strategic Dialogue

In weekly meetings between brands and agencies, it’s necessary that a lot of the dialogue be about the strategy, where are our campaigns working, are things trafficked, how are we pacing, what were the CPMs. None of that goes away, but I love to augment that dialogue with a dialogue around: here’s the actual incremental revenue that we drove last week, here’s how much more incremental revenue we could drive if you need to flex spend. That’s ultimately the dialogue that makes the media pay off. To me, the ultimate proof that we’re doing something right is when an agency calls us up and makes a referral to one of their clients: “Hey, we have a client who’s a good candidate to up their measurement game, to step into a top-notch understanding of marketing effectiveness, and we’d like LiftLab to present to them.” If we’re doing that, it’s clear that we’re doing something right and that our incentives are aligned.

Key Lessons: Aligning Agency and Client Incentives Around Incremental Revenue

  • Collaboration: Agencies that embrace better measurement tools see firsthand benefits for their own operations and client relationships.

  • Modernization: Relying on outdated last-click optimization creates a “head-in-the-sand” mentality that fails to serve the advertiser’s best interests.

  • Confidence: Providing clients with clear proof of incremental revenue allows them to invest more boldly in upper-funnel media channels.

  • Partnership: The ultimate proof of a successful platform integration is when an agency proactively refers their clients to the service.
