Media Plan Optimization: Why “Fully Optimized” Doesn’t Exist
Watch the Video

Media plan optimization has no finish line, since shorter time periods bring more volatility in price and response rate. This matters because reacting to a falling CPC depends on whether a channel is already saturated. Without tracking saturation alongside price, marketers miss channels on sale or keep funding ones that stopped paying off. This video explains why staying optimized requires constant, automated monitoring, not a one-time fix.

Why Media Plan Optimization Has No Finish Line

Media plan optimization has no finish line, because the KPI you’re optimizing for and the time period you’re measuring both change what “optimized” even means, and shorter windows bring volatility that never fully settles. In this video, John Wallace, CEO of LiftLab, starts with the KPI question: for most marketers, that’s marketing’s contribution to profit. The second question, just as important, is what time period you’re optimizing over, since a longer window is far easier to call optimized than a short one. With eight to twelve channels in a typical media plan, price and response rate both shift week to week, and that volatility is where the real difficulty lives.

Wallace walks through how to react to that volatility using CPC as the example: a falling CPC on a channel that’s already saturated means freed-up budget worth moving elsewhere, but the same falling CPC on a channel that isn’t saturated yet means that channel is effectively on sale and worth funding further. Telling those two situations apart requires tracking saturation alongside price, not just watching price alone. Because this cycle repeats continuously in short time horizons, Wallace argues real optimization requires an automated analytics system, at LiftLab, an Agile Mix Model paired with paid media experimentation, rather than a one-time analysis.

In this video, you’ll learn:

  • The importance of identifying your primary optimization KPI, such as profitability

  • Why optimization difficulty shifts significantly based on the chosen time horizon

  • How weekly volatility in price and response rates affects media channel performance

  • The strategy for managing media spend when facing saturation versus potential discounts

  • Why automated analytics are essential for maintaining effective media strategies today

In this video, LiftLab CEO John Wallace explains why media plan optimization is never fully finished, and how to react when CPC and saturation shift.

[0:00 – 0:19] Defining the Optimization KPI

The age-old question that marketers ask themselves is: “Am I fully optimized?” In order to answer that question, you have to start by understanding what is the KPI that you are optimizing to. The one that we see often and that people lean on the most is profitability; we want to optimize for profit, and it is actually marketing’s contribution to profit, that is the metric.

[0:19 – 0:41] The Impact of Timeframes and Volatility

The other question we have to answer is: “For what time period?” It is a lot easier to be optimized for a longer time period than a shorter one. The shorter the time period, the more volatility there is going to be, and we are going to see that volatility really in two places over and over again. If you have a media plan with eight to 12 channels in it, on a weekly basis, there is going to be volatility or change in the price and in the response rate.

[0:41 – 1:12] Navigating Media Spend and Saturation

So, let’s turn that into the metrics: if my CPC is going down, I need to ask myself the question: “Should I spend more money, or should I spend less money, or should I not react to that?” And you cannot answer that question without understanding the change in response rate or the saturation. If I am close to saturated and the CPC goes down, I might say: “I have just freed up some of my spend; I am going to move it to another channel.” But if we were not close to saturated and the price goes down, we may consider this media now on sale, and we want to actually spend more on it; we might take away from one of the other channels.

[1:12 – 1:36] Achieving Optimization Through Automation

So that is the virtuous cycle that we are in when we are talking about optimizing. And once you are into shorter time periods, you will never be completely optimized. A best practice for monitoring this much change and volatility across price and saturation clearly is going to require an automated analytics system. At LiftLab, we lean on an Agile Mix Model paired with paid media experimentation to answer these questions day in and day out.

Key Lessons: Reacting to Volatility in Media Plan Optimization

  • KPI focus: You must start by clearly defining your success metric, as optimization efforts are centered around marketing’s specific contribution to profit.

  • Time sensitivity: Longer time periods are easier to optimize, whereas shorter intervals inherently invite more volatility that prevents total, permanent optimization.

  • Strategic response: When monitoring metrics like CPC, you must evaluate channel saturation before deciding whether to increase spend or reallocate budget to different areas.

  • Data automation: To handle constant change and shifts in saturation across multiple media channels, utilizing an automated analytics system is a modern best practice.
