Thank you Roberto - indeed Fisher Price is a latecomer, there are some smaller companies around which do more innovative products.

And Animal Crossing used in a multi-player mode is definetely a good example of such a social software I was mentionning. However, my point was also to ideas about web applications for kids (I don't think animal crossing has any web publishing capabilities, is that correct?)

Hi Nicolas-

I have been reading your blog since the end of last year when I found you via Régine Debatty's wm$na. As a technology specialist at a primary school and as a parent, I find the content of your posts to be though provoking and inspiring. Thanks.

As for this entry: Fisher-Price is a bit late to the game. My kids have been using the Digital Blue products (most of which were originally part of the now defunct IntelPlay division) for some time now. They take videos and still images with the Movie Creator which they post to my Flickr account and more recently have begun using the QX5 microscope in the same way. Some day soon we'll be posting videos on Vimeo.

Anyway, Animal Crossing on the Nintendo DS when used with a Wi-Fi connection or across a room is a great example of social software for kids (of any age). I think we'll be seeing a lot more of this sort of gaming on the DS and also on the Revolution when it arrives later this year.

whoa, that's craziness...i mean, all that type of stuff sounds like products to buy and tinker with themselves in the name of providing for their kids. i can just picture a bourgeois parent saying

"little johnny just found his hands and already he is flipping between streaming audio of npr and mp3's of bruce springstein"
