Average web page size tripled in five years

An interesting graph for all those who started their careers with the notepad in web agencies, fearing that the amazing 40k background would repulse users. Web pages’ weight has sextupled in the past decade, going from 50k to 300k.

Thanks for the post about my article. The size of the average web page is certainly important, growing to over 312K in five year. It was the growth in the number of objects that got my attention.

The number of objects nearly doubled in five years, and if you go back to 1995 they’ve jumped by more than a factor of 20! In our research, we found that with connection speeds increasing, it is the number of external objects that determines, in large part, the download and display time of a web page.
