Laurent
Great post on the USA, as usual. I suggest you watch Bill Maher show on HBO. This guy is a true bush hater, food industry basher, ... A very critical look on the USA as it is today.
Cheers

Great post! As an American, it's interesting to see what people from outside our country say about us. We only hear how much everyone hates us. I've lived in Iowa (middle America) my whole life. California is definitely different than most of America, but you were right on a lot of points. Americans believe we live in the land of opportunity where no matter what your background is you can be successful. We believe if someone else can do it, we can do it. We believe it's up to us, not our government, to make us happy. A large part of our founding was based on the ability for us to "pursue happiness" in our own way.

Like all humans, we're not perfect. We do eat too much and are more materialistic than most countries (for some that's what makes them happy). It would be nice if more people would visit America and see what's great about it before judging us.

California is definitely one of the best place to live, but it is also clearly not an example of what the US is.

I always thought that California could have been situated somewhere in between Europe and the US, let's say the Caribbeans, because for so many things the general way of life is so much closer to the european mindset than the classical american that you find in other states - also coastal as in Florida, "proud" electors of the Bush admin ;).

Considering customs, try Miami immigration... I bet you'll have a new story to tell ;)
Considering food, California is the paradise of bio, vegie, low-fat, low carb, and the perfect body proportions, so I bet you didn't have trouble finding healthy food there. In a way ,they have also won this fight ;)
