Skype getting closer to mainstream

If you are an historic operator this is the news you should not miss today: Skype is going after your customers, and this time they won’t have to bother installing software:

The Register: Skype aims for mainstream with new products

VoIP giant Skype has announced a number of partnerships with telephony gadget manufacturers in a bid to reach a wider market with its internet telephony service.

In just one of the partnerships announced, the voice over internet protocol (VoIP) provider has linked up with Panasonic to release a cordless telephone which allows users to make internet voice calls and traditional PSTN calls using the same handset.

So the second episode of the trilogy is coming. First the technology to encode and transfer your voice all over the globe, second the terminal to free you from your computer. Third: the network. Expect a major news in what will soon be the last thing to prevent skype from killing your usual phone operators.

I’m waiting until my ADSL contract expires and we can port-in our old phone numbers from Swisscom. It’s bound to happen, isn’t it?
