IP phones for 2007
This
article of the Journal du Net, explaining how voice over IP will be available in less than two years in Japan, makes me think that it is very likely the next people who will desperately fight to protect a failed business model are phone operators.
After the music industry (finally using technologies to its advantage instead of fighting them) and the movie studios (who seem to be at a turning point, the latest sign being the deals Apple struck to distribute video content over the Internet), phone companies will try to protect their revenues based on a dead pricing model. Voice over IP works the same way as broadband Internet connections: you pay a monthly fee and can use it as much as you can. Big shift.
Don’t expect this transition to go smoothly. We will probably get our fair share of abusive prices, consumer-are-crooks trials, etc…
PS: I think 3G will go down in history as the worst ever investment. Wimax, the super-wifi that will become a reality in the coming months, is going to kill 3G before it could even reach the masses.
